"You are turning 94 next month, please accept my congratulations,", said Wen, who is also member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, during his visit to Ji, one of the most famous literary giants, educationists and social activists in China. He is well versed in English, Germany, Sanscrit, Vedaic, Pali and Tocharian and can read French and Russian.

He has contributed tremendously in the fields of linguistics, literature, historiography, Buddhist philosophy, the study of India and comparative literature.

Wen also asked Ji to give him for a copy of his latest works, Surfing on the Sea of Learning. And Ji agreed.

"I am not ready to leave (the world), though I'm turning 94. I want to live to be 108."

The premier once again expressed his sincere wish that the century-old scholar would live longer and stay healthier.

After leaving Ji's ward in the General Hospital of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), Wen came to see Qian Xuesen, who is praised as the "scientist of the people".

Qian, one of China's most prominent scientists and founders of space science, is also 94 years old.

At his ward bed, Wen recalled his meeting with Qian, who masterminded the nation's missile project, 15 years ago.

"You said the society is a comprehensive, systematic project, which should not only achieve material progress but also should have an advanced culture, ideology and politics," Wen recalled.

Qian nodded his consent, with a smiling face.

Wen said, "you are the founder of China's space industry."

"That's why the United States tried to stop me coming back. But I made up mind to return home," said Qian, who had been received by late Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai on quite a number of occasions.

Wen told Qian that China is now busy with the drafting of a development program for science and technology, which has defined the key development areas and technologies in addition to a dozen special projects of vital importance.

Qian, who is knowledgeable in quite a few areas, urging great attention being given to training talents with innovative capabilities.

The premier said he would discuss his suggestions with departments concerned.

The meeting between the scientist and the premier covered a wide range of subjects with great interest. Wen had to take his leave at about 10 a.m..
