Fidelity agreement: last resort for wedlock ethics?

A piece of paper may turn out to be the last resort to secure wedlock for Chinese couples. Fidelity agreement, believe it or not, is now trendy in some Chinese families.

FIDELITY AGREEMENT: TO KEEP SPOUSE ON TRACK?

With proof at hand, Liu Lan, 35, a middle-age woman in the cityof Harbin in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, asked for 300,000 yuan (37,500 US dollars) in compensation from her husband,who was found in breach of their fidelity agreement.

According to the agreement, Liu and her husband were supposed to be fidel to each other. The one who broke the accord would haveto pay compensation to the other one, as well as the property and foster rights of child.

Liu Lan divorced her husband in 2003 since he "behaved out of track", and had an affair with a girl who was pregnant.

In 2004, the ex-husband asked for restoration of the marriage and said he had already cut off relations with the girl.

To guard against her husband from going "out of track" again, Liu proposed a fidelity agreement, and her ex-husband signed his name on it.

"Huge compensation amount may rein in my husband's behavior, and protect my interests," said Liu, when asked why she proposed the agreement.

In the agreement, a total of nearly one million yuan (about 125,000 US dollars) of compensation will be involved.
