Still, some analysts say bilateral relations can improve.

"Japan is certainly eager to improve relations. On the other hand, China also realizes that its ties with Japan are essential for regional stability, China's economy, and so on," Cheng said. "If leaders can avoid provocative statements and actions, ties can improve."

But others predict ties will deteriorate even more, particularly as rivalry between the two countries is spreading to the international stage as seen in 2005 with Japan's diplomatic efforts to win a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council and China's moves to block it.

The relations "are bad, and they will get much worse before they improve," said Gordon Chang, an Asia expert and the author of "The Coming Collapse of China."

"This is beginning to look like a contest that could last for decades. China and Japan are essentially fighting for power, prestige, and the leadership of East Asia," Chang said.
