Portland took a 94-88 lead in the fourth after Telfair made his fifth
3-pointer and Ruben Patterson converted a fast-break dunk. Telfair hit
back-to-back jumpers to make it 100-94 with 4:13 to go.
Randolph started off 6-of-6 from the field, missed 10 of his next 12 shots.
Garnett leads Wolves past Nuggets 103-89
MINNEAPOLIS - Kevin Garnett had a season-high 31 points on 14-for-17 shooting
and 15 rebounds Friday night to help the Minnesota Timberwolves even their
record with a 103-89 win over the Denver Nuggets.
Wally Szczerbiak, who made eight of his final 10 field goals, added 28 points
and spurred the Timberwolves on a decisive 20-4 run that closed the third
quarter. Rookie Rashad McCants chipped in 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting and six
rebounds.
Carmelo Anthony, held in check for most of the night by Trenton Hassell,
scored eight points in the fourth period to finish with 21 for the Nuggets.
Kenyon Martin returned after a one-game bout with back spasms to score 14
points, and Andre Miller also had 14.
But Minnesota (17-17) played one of its most complete games and picked up its
second straight victory after dropping 11 of the previous 14 games. It was a
timely win, too, against rival Denver (18-19), which is also fighting for first
place in the not-so-dominant Northwest Division with Utah (19-17).
Szczerbiak had three layups, a 19-footer, a pair of 3-pointers and a free
throw — after Anthony was whistled for a technical foul — in the final 4:38 of
the third quarter to lead the surge. The Nuggets went nearly four minutes
without scoring in a drought that spilled into the fourth.
The Wolves had stretches of sloppiness, including the first four minutes of
the second half when Marko Jaric committed two of their three turnovers.
Anthony's driving layup with 4:54 remaining in the third quarter put Denver
ahead 62-59 before Minnesota pulled away.
Garnett made three mid-range jumpers, an alley-oop layup and a dunk to spark
the Wolves on a 19-5 spurt out of the gate. The Nuggets missed 11 of their first
13 shots before climbing back into the game and eventually taking their first
lead, 39-38, on Martin's pair of free throws with 4:34 left before halftime.
McCants, the moody first-round draft pick whose contributions have been
sporadic, answered with a 3-pointer and then swished a 20-footer to finish with
nine first-half points and help Minnesota stay on top at the break, 49-48.
Arenas leads Wizards past Pacers 94-85
INDIANAPOLIS - Gilbert Arenas scored 18 of his 37 points in the fourth
quarter to lead the Washington Wizards over the Indiana Pacers 94-85 on Friday
night.
Caron Butler added 24 points and eight rebounds for
Washington, which has won two straight games.
