Blast at Indian railway station injures 13

A bomb exploded at a railway station in the western Indian city of Ahmadabad, injuring at least 13 people early Sunday, officials said.

The powerful blast might have caused more casualties if the station had not been largely empty when it occurred in the early hours of Sunday, Ahmadabad police director A. K. Bhargava told the Press Trust of India news agency. He said the bomb was not a "crude device."

Most of those hurt suffered light injuries, the NDTV news channel reported.

No group claimed responsibility for the bomb. However, militants from Indian-controlled Kashmir have carried out several attacks across India in recent months. The Islamic militants are fighting for independence from mainly Hindu India or a union with mostly Muslim Pakistan.

Police have stepped up security across the city, Bhargava said.

NDTV showed images of police sifting through a pile of twisted metal and rubble that littered the platform at the site of the blast.
