Dispute over mother's ashes

An elderly man surnamed Tang sued his step children for taking their birth mother's ash urn from the funeral home and burying it in a cemetery without informing him, reports the Shanghai Xinmin Evening News.

The deceased surnamed Zhang had three children, and after her first husband died, married Tang.

The Nanhui District Court announced that whether the children or the spouse have the right to deal with the ashes is not clearly stated in law.

But according to Chinese custom, after the ashes are buried, it is thought best not to move it, so the court refused Tang's request for the urn's return.
