The film "Ren Shan Ren Hai," or "People Mountain People Sea," was listed as the "surprise film" to compete for the Golden Lion in the 68th Venice Film Festival on September 4, 2011, ifeng.com reports. Gu Xiaobai, screenwriter of the film, confirmed that the film director Cai Shangjun has left for Venice.
The film was inspired by a real case in Liupanshui, Guizhou province. It tells the story of five brothers chasing a criminal for a very long distance. The film will premiere globally on Sept 6 (local time in Venice).
"Surprise film" is a Golden Lion category introduced by director Marco Muller in 2004. A film will be announced taking part in the competition at the last moment before the jury begin to evaluate the films. The Chinese film "Still Life," directed by Jia Zhangke, was a "surprise film" in 2006 and won the year's Golden Lion.
