Originally thought to be a Longman's beaked whale, the specimen has now been identified as a bottlenose whale. The whale's body was examined at Byron Bay, where it was stranded. Dr Sandy Ingelby, from the Australian Museum, says all the body parts have been frozen and researchers at the museum are very excited about receiving this uncommon animal. "It's terrific... these animals you know very little about their biology and the opportunities to find out anything are quite rare," she said.
