影片簡介：

地球的上空突然出現了十二架貝殼狀的不明飛行物，懸浮在十二個不同的國家的上空，外星人向人類發出了訊號，但人類卻并不能夠解讀。美國軍方找到了語言學家露易絲（艾米·亞當斯 Amy Adams 飾）和物理學家伊恩（杰瑞米·雷納 Jeremy Renner 飾），希望兩人能夠合作破解外星人的語言之謎。

經過數次的接觸，露易絲發現外星人使用了一種極為特殊的圓環狀的文字，并逐漸了解了其中的奧妙。由于一直無法確定外星人來到地球的真正目的，中國、俄羅斯等四國決定對外星人發起進攻，美方亦決定放棄研究將全部人員撤離，在這個節骨眼上，露易絲終于明白了外星人的意圖，利用外星人賦予她的特殊的“武器”，露易絲以一人之力改變了未來。
