北京國際音樂節自創辦之日起，素來不遺余力地支持當代音樂發展，每逢金秋十月奉上當代作品音樂會以讓觀眾緊隨世界音樂發展潮流。被譽為世界上演繹當代音樂最佳樂團之一的倫敦小交響樂團在其三十多年的發展歷程中一如既往地致力于委約當代杰出作曲家們的新意之作。英國作曲家喬治?本杰明系當代音樂代表人物，任哈雷管弦樂團首席客座藝術家與倫敦大學國王學院作曲教授的他在作曲領域享有與潘德列茨基不相伯仲的音樂成就。此番本杰明指揮倫敦小交響樂團實屬新音樂的權威合作。

音樂會曲目安排盡顯中西文化合璧之意，作曲家陳其鋼以中國西北音樂元素創作的《道情Ⅱ》將融入到英國當代作品中。哈里森?伯特威斯爾和奧利弗?克努森皆為當代英國獨具個性的作曲家，《卡門的機械花園》、《無聲的歌》分別是他們的代表作。曾榮登英國皇家歌劇院舞臺的《走進小山》本為喬治?本杰明的歌劇杰作，此次亦將以音樂會版與觀眾見面?，F代之音奏響前，同為音樂大師梅西安弟子的本杰明與陳其鋼將對話新音樂觀念的本質，引領觀眾走入新音樂之地。

Introduction

This rare treat of a concert features both East and West, with Chen Qigang’s Extase II programmed amidst British contemporary works. Harrison Birtwistle and Oliver Knussen are both distinguished living British composers, and Carmen Arcadiae Mechanicae Perpetuum and Songs without Voices are their respective representative works. Benjamin’s operaInto the Little Hill, which has graced the stage at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden’s Linbury Theatre, is presented in concert version to the Beijing audience.

About George Benjamin

Born in 1960, George Benjamin is one of the most outstanding composers of his generation. He started to play the piano at the age of seven, and began composing almost immediately. In 1976, he entered the Paris Conservatoire to study with Olivier Messiaen (composition) and Yvonne Loriod (piano), after which he concluded his studies at King's College Cambridge under Alexander Goehr.

As a conductor, he regularly appears with some of the world's leading ensembles and orchestras, among them the London Sinfonietta, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra and Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic.

Since 2001, he has been the Henry Purcell Professor of Composition at King’s College, London. His works are published by Faber Music and are recorded on Nimbus Records.
