They never wanted to be apart in life and devoted Doreen and Bert Swan could not even be separated by death…

The couple died within 11 hours of each other after a 70-year marriage and will now be laid to rest in a joint funeral next week.

Doreen, 91, passed away at the nursing home where they both lived and 93-year-old Bert died later in hospital.

She suffered from dementia so was in a special unit. But care workers told how the pair always greeted each other with a "kiss on the lips" when they met. Manager Mandi Short said: "They were very much a loving couple."

Reverend Sam Weeden, who will conduct Doreen and Bert's funeral service, added: "They were inseparable. They were devoted to each other. In retirement they did absolutely everything together."

"But they reluctantly decided a couple of months ago that they were no longer able to live independently and needed more help in a nursing home."

A neighbour added: "Doreen and Bert never went anywhere except with each other. At the end he had to look after her all the time." The couple married in 1941 and had three sons, Paul, Robert and Richard. They also had grandchildren and a great grandson.

Doreen and Bert moved into the Merlin Court Nursing Home at Marlborough, Wilts, from their house in nearby Ramsbury.

Bert was a former metallurgist. Mr Weeden added: "He worked all over the world advising governments and companies on metallurgy."

"Doreen was very much the person who lived at home and looked after the family. That was her whole life."

Bert died of a chest infection at Great Western Hospital, Swindon. He had not been told about his wife's death.
