British Prime Minister Tony Blair strutted into the fashion world on Tuesday -- then revealed that his attempts tocut a dashin the beachwear range proved a disaster.
Blair, normally a man for a sober suit-and-tie combination, lifted the lid on his fashion hell as he attended the opening of the Fashion Retail Academy's new home in London.
"I have to say that when I told my wife and 18-year-old daughter about coming to the opening of this fashion academy, theyfell aboutlaughing," he said.
"I am not known for my fashion sense. When I wore a particular brand of swimming trunks one year, the sales then collapsed."
Blair's style notions were put to the test when he was asked to choose a pair of women's shoes to match grey shorts and a woolly jumper.
"I'm absolutely the worst with this", he said before reluctantly plumping for a shiny grey pair.
Takingcolour co-ordination tipson board, he pointed to his own black suit and red tie and said: "I haven't learned it before but I will do my best to learn it in the future."
Sir Philip Green, owner of the Arcadia group which includes British high street giants such as Topshop, reckoned Blair had some talent for a novice and offered him a job once he quits office next year.
"You could have missed your vocation in life. If you are looking for something new to do afterwards we could help," Green said to Blair.
The prime minister replied: "You would have to start me right at the bottom."

當天，布萊爾在倫敦出席了時裝零售培訓學院新校址的剪彩儀式，這位平日里總是西裝革履的首相先生首次向外界透露了自己在時尚方面的失敗經歷。
他說：“當我告訴妻子和18歲的女兒我要來參加時尚學院的這個剪彩儀式時，她們竟然大笑起來。”
他自嘲說：“我的時尚感實在不行，有一年我穿了某個品牌的泳褲，結果那個品牌的泳褲銷量大跌。”
布萊爾還當場接受了一個時尚品位測試，為一條灰色短褲和一件套頭羊毛衫配一雙鞋。
他說：“這可是我最不拿手的。”布萊爾猶豫了半天，最后挑中了一雙亮面灰色女鞋。
談到顏色的搭配技巧時，布萊爾指著自己的黑色西裝和紅色領帶說：“我以前從未‘研究’過這個問題，不過以后我會努力去學。”
一同在場的阿卡迪亞服裝集團總裁菲利普·格林爵士說，布萊爾有初學者的天分，并邀請布萊爾明年離任后到他的公司工作。阿卡迪亞集團旗下有英國很多知名服裝品牌，Topshop就是其中一家。
格林對布萊爾說：“你可能沒有覺察到自己的才能。如果以后你想干點別的，我樂意幫忙。”
布萊爾回答說：“那你只能讓我從最底層做起。”
