Publishers hear copyright call
Yan Xiaohong, deputy head of the national copyright administration, called for stronger global cooperation in copyright protection during a meeting with a delegation from the International Publishers Association on Nov 13.
He said the administration plans to build a library of copyrighted works to improve copyright management and services to owners. It is also organizing training and education programs to promote copyright awareness.
Youngsuk Chi, president of the IPA, said the association is "willing to establish a Chinese branch under the Copyright Society of China".

1.2b yuan patent examination center
The provincial government and the State Intellectual Property Office plan to invest 1.2 billion yuan ($192.4 million) to build a patent examination center in the provincial capital Zhengzhou, the fourth of its kind nationwide after Beijing, Jiangsu and Guangdong centers. Scheduled for completion in 2015, the center is expected to have about 2,000 employees by 2017. It is designed to examine some 110,000 patent applications yearly.

Hangzhou to host AIPPI congress
Hangzhou has recently won the bid to host the 2020 congress of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, which is known as AIPPI for its French acronym. Hangzhou's trade promotional association said the successful bid came after competition with Lisbon and Amsterdam at an AIPPI meeting in Seoul in late October. The congress is held every other year with wide participation by governments, companies, IP agencies and research institutions. Hosting the event is expected to promote IP progress in the city and at the same time help improve China's status in the IP domain, local officials say.

US law firm holds seminar circuit
The Guangdong Intellectual Property Research and Development Center and Washington, DC intellectual law firm Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner recently organized a circuit of seminars in the province on the US intellectual property system. The series aimed to help Chinese electronics companies better understand the US legal system while improving their IP strategy, increase competence and reduce risks in the global market, said Patrick Coyne, a partner at the law firm. His Chinese colleague Wang Ningling said increasing numbers of Chinese companies entering the international market means their IP awareness is also on the rise.

Police bust massive fake handbag ring
A recent joint operation by Chinese police and the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency cracked a counterfeit case that involved more than 70 suspects and fake-branded products worth of around 5 billion yuan. Police in Guangdong, Fujian and Anhui provinces raided 37 illicit operations and seized more than 20,000 counterfeit handbags carrying famous brands such as LV, Hermes and Coach. The investigation found that the group had produced nearly 1 million fake handbags, most of them exported to the United States and the Middle East.

Forum on IP trading in Asia set for Dec 7
The Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Hong Kong Design Center will host the second Business of IP Asia Forum scheduled for Dec 7. The forum will focus on IP trading in Asia, especially the latest developments in the Chinese mainland market. More than 1,000 delegates representing businesses and IP service providers and users are expected to participate. Last year, the forum attracted more than 700 delegates from 19 countries and regions. Raymond Yip, assistant executive director of HKTDC, said Hong Kong is "a reliable IP trading platform with its well-established legal system and business network".
