This book explores the policy choices and institutional framework for the agricultural subsidies in the middle stage of China's industrialization which aim to secure the supply of major agricultural products and to increase the incomes of farmers.

The subsidies focus on key products and areas, and the crucial links. and the authors suggest the country should aim to establish – within the shortest possible delay - an agricultural subsidy support mechanism and policy system with direct subsidies as the main part and supplemented by price support.

The author uses first-hand data collected from in-depth field research - and overseas experience in agricultural subsidies - to seek answers to issues such as: why the agriculture sector should be subsidized and how to determine the content and range of agricultural subsidies, as well as the goals, basic principles and key areas of the agricultural subsidies in the middle stage of industrialization. The author also analyzes in detail how the subsidies should be managed and how to make the policies more relevant and effective.
