Abstract: As the basis for formulating conservation strategies and evaluating conservation effectiveness, biodiversity survey and monitoring constitute a major part in biodiversity conservation. However, due to the scientific nature, professional requirements and high cost of biodiversity monitoring, it is difficult to push ahead the investigation and monitoring work. To address this issue, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has introduced the international “community-oriented” model to China, and established a joint conservation platform for government management agencies, social organizations, scientific research institutions, community residents and the general public to promote the protection of Yunnan golden snub-nosed monkey populations and their habitats in Laojunshan conservation area of Lijiang prefectural city, Yunnan province. By improving governance capacity and encouraging multi-party participation, this model could continuously enhance the willingness and capability of the community to take part in monitoring and protection work, develop alternative eco-industries to drive the protection and monitoring project, and form a positive interaction between amicable conservative areas’ advancement and community’s sustainable development. With the promotion of mainstreaming work of biodiversity conservation, community-based biodiversity monitoring can serve as an important supplement to government and research institutions’ monitoring job, and be more widely applied to other nature conservation areas in China.
