Fujian province will accelerate the development of the Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone by giving more power to the pilot zone's administrative committee in terms of land usage, regulation and management, Chinanews Fuzhou bureau reported on Jan 27.

"The pilot zone aims to develop into a center for cross-Straits communication," said Su Shulin, governor of Fujian province, at the First Session of the 12th Fujian People's Congress on Jan 27.

He hopes the two sides can achieve common planning, development, operation, management and benefits (the "Five Commons"). The provincial government will soon release a series of favorable measures to support the cause.

Pingtan is the closest spot on the Chinese mainland to Taiwan. For better cross-Straits cooperation, Fujian province established the pilot zone in 2010. Over the past three years, 100 billion yuan ($16.07 billion) has been allocated for its infrastructure development. The zone also enjoys more favorable policies than any other special economic zone in the nation.

"Fujian will introduce more policies to accelerate Pingtan's infrastructure development. In addition to the direct Pingtan-Taichung sea route, Pingtan plans to put in place a new route between Pingtan and Taipei this year," Su added.

Su also noted that Fujian will redouble its support for low-carbon industries like modern logistics and introduce institutional innovations in public administration, investment, financing and other areas.
