Established in 1970, Wuyang Iron & Steel was originally a military project for national defense. In 1978, the company, known as the King of China’s rolling mills, succeeded in constructing rolling mills for 4,200mm-wide thick steel plates. This put an end to the long historical era in which China’s iron & steel companies could not produce ultra-wide and thick steel plates.

As a result of developments over the past 30 years, Wuyang Iron & Steel now has two 90-ton ultra-high power electric furnaces, three LF refiner furnaces, and two VD and VOD vacuum treatment furnaces. It also has nine large ingot mold die casting lines, one 300×1,900mm slab casting machines, 4,200mm-wide and thick plate mills, and short-term special steel production lines, including thermal treatment furnaces, such as normalizing furnaces, outer machine furnaces, car bottom furnaces, glowing furnaces, and burial pits.

In 2007, the company invested 3.5 billion yuan to construct a new production line comprised of one 100t ultra-high power electric stove, two 100tLF double station fineries, two 100tVD vacuum treatment furnaces, one 300*2,500mm-wide slab continuous casting machine, one 4,100mm high rigidity wide and thick plate mill, and supporting facilities. The main products fall into 12 categories: dilute alloy high strength plates, carbon structural slabs, alloy structural slabs, bridge plates, building structural slabs, shipbuilding and ocean oil production platform slabs, boiler and pressure vessel slabs, mould slabs, pipeline slabs, tank armor slabs, wear-resisting plates, and composite boards. All products must be 8-650mm thick, 1,500- 4,020mm wide and 3,000-27,000mm long.

On September 8, 1997, Wuyang Iron & Steel was restructured from an enterprise administered by central authorities into an enterprise controlled by Hangang Group. On June 28, 2008, Wuyang Iron & Steel joined Hebei Iron & Steel Group.
