In early 2009, Ruzhou city decided to make comprehensive treatment of the northern Ruhe River after rounds of argumentation. It has listed the project as a key item of the city’s construction. Nowadays, success has been achieved.

Ruhe River, the mother river of Ruzhou, stretches 44.8 kilometers in the city. The drainage areas amount to 1,507 square kilometers in six townships, three sub-district administrative regions, 66 administrative villages and 82 natural villages.

Due to the absence of unified effective management over the years, the river channel has fallen victim to excessive excavation of river sand, a severe threat to the drainage ecology area, water point protection, flood control, and transportation safety. The industrial sewage and stockpiled household waste have made the river channel overgrown with grass and weeds, seriously damaging the appearance of the city. The Ruzhou municipal Party committee and municipal government have held many meetings to discuss programs to clean out the mother river.

The first treatment stage of the northern Ruhe River, falling in the section of townships, comprises riverway treatment, Ruhe park construction, and construction of three rubber dams, western Ruhe road, and Jieyuan road embankment. The project needs an investment of 500 million yuan. When finished, the project will greatly alleviate flood threat to the banks of the Ruhe River. It will supply sufficient water resources for the industrial and agricultural development and urban residents. It will attract more urban construction projects and industrial layout to the northern Ruhe River, and provide sound sites for local people to make the most of their leisure and entertainment time and body building exercises. They will contribute to make the city an ideal place for residents.
