Boats decorated with colorful lanterns, a folk activity popular in regions south of the Yangtze River, are quite popular both in and out of Zhouzhuang. On the night of Lantern Festival (Feb 24), boats decorated with lanterns of various shapes traveled on the water playing stringed music and creating a beautiful atmosphere in Zhouzhuang.

Lanterns were everywhere: on the boats, along the streets and in people's hands. Visitors were eager to have a look at the beautiful scenery. The lantern riddles activity also attracted many people, creating a bustling atmosphere. Visitors followed local customs by lighting up lotus lanterns, putting them on the water's surface and making wishes.
