Huishan district was established in 2001, with an area of 325 square kilometers, and a permanent population of 580,000. It consists of one provincial economic development zone, five sub-districts and two towns.
It has a long history and culture. It is home to many historical figures and sages, including Lu Dingyi (a proletarian revolutionist), Xue Muqiao (a proletarian revolutionist), Sun Yefang (a famous economist and a proletarian revolutionist), Xu Shou (a scientist in the Qing Dynasty) and Feng Qiyong (an elderly artist).
Huishan enjoys a good reputation for its beautiful sceneries and rapidly developing economy, known as "an area filled with fish and rice". It is also home to the famous Yangshan honey peach.
In recent years, it has pioneered many industries, such as metallurgy, machinery and textile, as well as four newly-developed industries, including photovoltaics, wind power generation devices, cars and auto parts, biomedical technology and digital information.
