A boy who has suffered from cerebral palsy since birth managed to enroll in Jilin University this summer in Changchun, North China’s Jilin province, according to jl.xinhuanet.com of July 13, which explained that because of the disease, he had great difficulties in learning to speak and walk and was much slower than other children.

Xu Yongchen cannot fully control his arms so writing was very difficult but that did not stop him from being a hard-working student. And, he managed to graduate from Changchun’s Experimental High School No 2 with a score of 598 on this year’s college entrance exam, or 78 points more than the cut-off score for key university admission.

Both Xu’s parents are teachers and placed a great deal of importance on educating their child, for example, by patiently cutting up paper into little squares so that Xu could practice writing.

In commenting on the success, Xu’s father says, “I’m so relieved that he was enrolled by Jilin University, because it was his goal.” Adding to that, the principal of his old school, Li Guorong says, ?“He is a clever and quick-witted student and he is very interested in liberal arts but chose sciences, since it demands less writing.” Xu had 30-percent more time to complete the exam than other students, thanks to the regulations help students who suffer from cerebral palsy, and the exam authorities in Jilin allotted a special place and some staff members to help him.

In conclusion, Xu says he hopes to do research work in the future.
