In the 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-2010) period, the Cultural Bureau of Dandong has adhered to innovation in activity fields, expansion and promotion of international cultural exchange, and given high priority to cultural exchanges with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the Republic of Korea (ROK).
The exchange mostly takes the form of ethnic singing and dancing, photography, calligraphy, and painting, giving full scope to its role as a “cultural ambassador” and forging the image of a “cultural Dandong.”
It has extended the international influence of Dandong somewhat. The culture exchange has involved the Ulsan Environmental Protection Art Troupe and Uijongbu Dance Troupe from ROK, and the Manygongdae Children’s Art Troupe, Mansudae Art Troupe, Pibada Opera Troupe and National Art Troupe from the DPRK.
The Cultural Bureau of Dandong and its counterpart from Chuncheon, ROK jointly organized the Dandong-Chuncheon Photography Exhibition and formed a mutual visit mechanism. The exhibition has been held ten times.
The Cultural Bureau of Dandong attended “Inchon International Dance Festival” in ROK and performed Manchu single-drum dance “Piping Times of Peace” in 2001, and organized folk dance evening parties, traditional Chinese painting exhibitions, calligraphy exhibitions and paper cutting exhibitions in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010.
The bureau has acted as cultural exchange delegation of Dandong municipal government to show Uijongbu the charm of regional culture, boosting the international popularity of Dandong and promoting friendly communication with the two countries.
The Dandong Song and Dance Troupe organized a traditional instruments orchestra and a vocal band to attend the China National Day celebration held by Chinese embassy in the DPRK in 2009, and the “Happy Spring Festival” cultural activities in 2010.
