Public toilets have always been a troublesome problem in China. However, thanks to the national drive launched in 2015 to build and renovate public toilets, known as the "toilet revolution", the problem is gradually being alleviated.
Jiading, an important part of the international metropolis of Shanghai, has been constantly updated in the past two decades. More and more toilets have been built there, some of high quality. The toilet in Nanxiang Shineland Park is one of the highlights.
Located in district A of Nanxiang Shineland Park, the toilet covers about 114 square meters. After expert and public review and online voting, it stood out from more than 280 public toilets, and was rated as one of the most beautiful public toilets in Shanghai.
The Nanxiang Shineland Park toilet facility is well equipped. It has a unisex restroom with a baby chair, large and small close stools, and a multi-functional baby care table. What's more, service facilities including sofa, charger and emergency pager are available to citizens.
The Nanxiang Shineland public toilet is cleaned more than 16 hours per day. As soon as someone finishes using the toilet, the cleaning staff will immediately clean the area with a mop. Apart from that, a standardized management system applies. The cleaning staff must fill out a cleaning service log every 10 to 30 minutes.
Though the public toilet conditions in urban areas have greatly improved, the ones in the countryside have many deficiencies, such as the unreasonable locations of toilet cubicles for men and women and the low number of unisex toilets and barrier-free facilities.
One of the prominent problems reflected by the masses is that certain parts of the public toilet facilities in rural areas are generally incomplete, including the lighting, wash basins, tool rooms, mirrors and signage.
Jiading will continue to promote the "toilet revolution" in 2019. It is expected that renovation of five unisex restrooms will be completed and 118 public toilets will be upgraded to "civilized toilet" status during the year.
