Railway
The length of railways has reached 3773.7 kilometers in 2012. The volume of freight traffic was 714 million tons, up by 3.2 percent while the number for passenger traffic was 62.081, down by 0.2 percent.
Highway
The length of the province's highways reached 138,000 kilometers by 2012, with a highway density of 87 km/100-sq-km. It had 5011 kilometers of expressways, an increase of 1,006 km from the previous year, putting it among the top five provinces. The expressway network covered 108 of the province’s counties, cities, and districts, while the condition of arterials significantly improved, bringing 96.3 percent of its national roads and 85.5 percent of provincial roads up to secondary road standards. Its highways handled 732 million tons of freight in total, up 12.2 percent from the previous year, and 337 million passengers, a year-on-year increase of 2.4 percent.
Aviation
Shanxi had four airports handling 87,068 flights, in 2012, up 14 percent, and handled 8,521,000 passengers, up 17.5 percent. They had a handling capacity of 48,000 tons, or 6.8 percent more than the previous year. Taiyuan’s Wu Xu International Airport has 81 domestic airline flights, five regional airline flights (Hong Kong and Taiwan), and eight international airline flights, to Inchon, South Korea, Bangkok and Phuket, Thailand, and elsewhere.
Post and telecommunications
Shanxi's post and telecommunications did 33.94 billion yuan in business, for a year-on-year increase of 11.2 percent, with the postal service accounting for 3.04 billion, up 15.8 percent, and telecommunications for 30.9 billion yuan, up 10.8 percent. It also had 27.65 million mobile phone users by the end of 2012, with 5.48 million 3G mobile phone users. And, at least 5.05 million households had access to the Internet, that year for a growth of 15.4 percent year-on-year.
