The China Population Welfare Foundation announced in May that this year it was donating over 4,000 boxes containing baby products worth up to 2 million yuan ($290,000) to pregnant women from two poverty-stricken counties in northwestern China's Gansu province and Central China's Hubei province. It also said it would hold training classes for local obstetricians. Foundation director Hao Linna said the event aimed to help reduce the cost of parenting babies in poor families and guarantee the health of mothers and infants.

Six public sanitation workers were invited in May to taste dishes made of watermelon peel and chicken gristle. They ate at a Shanghai restaurant, dining on courses using leftover food - to promote the idea of waste prevention and environmental protection. Liu Yifan, head chef of the restaurant, said people could also make the most of such materials in an innovative way to cook even more delicious dishes. Changan Ford Automobile Co Ltd opened the restaurant on May 1.

          Steps taken for charity hikers

A charity event involving counting steps while hiking for children in need - kicked off in May. Organizers were China's One Foundation, together with Coca-Cola, Vivo mobile and US apparel brand Skechers. Under the rules, the steps made by each team that completed the set hike within a certain time limit were counted and converted into donations through online platforms including Wechat and QQ. The annual event has helped an estimated 145,000 kids in poor or disaster-stricken areas in China between 2013 and 2016.

Construction of first aid stations funded

The Chinese Red Cross Foundation's Happy Angel Fund donated cash and goods worth 10.53 million yuan ($1.5 million) in late April for the construction of first aid stations and training of 1,000 emergency workers in seven scenic spots in Sanya in southern China' Hainan province. The stations will be equipped with lounges, oxygen cylinders, stretchers and maternity and childcare facilities. The donation also included baby food and congenital serious disease examinations for 1,000 newborns from poor families in the province.

          Square dancing lovers feted

The China Sports Foundation and Chinese Gymnastics Association last month launched a fund targeting square dancing lovers among the poor, the elderly who live alone as well as disabled students. A group of volunteers will be recruited to join the square dancing initiative across the country after the launching ceremony.
