Celebrate but do not waste

Governments should fight extravagance and waste by auditing the accounts for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China (PRC), says an article in China Business View. Excerpt:

Ji Lin, standing deputy mayor of Beijing, has reportedly said the government would exercise thrift in the PRC's 60th anniversary. All projects will be approved only after strict assessment and expenses will be audited after the event.

National Day celebrations are important. But it is necessary, too, that we always keep thrift in mind.

The government's austerity drive has reduced the number of participants in the parade from 240,000 in the 50th anniversary to 180,000 this time. Festooned vehicles have also been cut, from 90 to 60. What's more, the authorities have decided to audit the accounts of the celebration, letting the public know where the funds have been used and why.

The media have exposed several scandals of extravagance and waste related to recent celebrations. Several highly costly books and photo albums have been published in the name of commemorating the 60th anniversary of the PRC.

It has also become common to see local governments compete with each other to show off their prowess. Such extravagance results in a colossal waste of taxpayers' money and will lead to corruption. These acts should be criticized and calls for effective supervision.

Local governments should follow the example of the central government and audit the accounts for their National Day celebrations. Strict audit and public supervision is one way to fight extravagance and waste.
