Comment on "Guidelines to secure Chinese tourists abroad" (China Daily, June 18)
Governments of most countries "strongly recommend" their citizens to buy travel insurance when they travel overseas. This can be quite expensive, but it is worth it compared to the cost one has to pay if something goes wrong.
That leads us to the basic concept in many Western countries that individuals should take responsibility for themselves. Of course, governments warn their citizens of the risks they could face - such as diseases, crime- if they travel to certain countries. As more and more Chinese citizens travel overseas, there will be a huge market for travel insurance and travel emergency assistance.
