The power of dreams

Comment on "This is Beijing: I have a dream" (China Daily website, Sept 7)

I love the new feature in China Daily, and I'd like to share some of my ideas with the interviewees.

The first step toward realizing our dreams is to imagine what it would be like if they were to come true. Since the time I was a teenager, it was my dream to come to China. And since I have realized my dream, I have begun to understand the power of dreams.

I hope Wang Wen realizes her dream of building a quality home for the aged. I like her idea of encouraging youths to volunteer and learn from older people, for that has always been a mutually beneficial social arrangement. The most peaceful place I have ever visited was a small ranch in Colorado. The couple who ran the ranch took in old horses to give them a good home at the end of their life. There, I learned what peace on earth is really like. It comes from cherishing and caring for older people, maybe even disabled people and animals. I believe that caring for and loving older people is a good way of strengthening a nation.

I also hope Du Fukui returns to his hometown and starts tilling his farm again. Since China is transforming farming into agribusiness, the sustainable practice of keeping the land fertile is being lost. I think it's time people started appreciating the value of the work farmers do and ensured that they didn't languish at the bottom of the economic ladder. Keep true to your dreams - achieving them could become easier if you can attract others to join you in your endeavors.
