Stricter media supervision to protect freedom

The United Kingdom is creating new measures related to supervision of the media. This is one part of the self-adjustment of the Western capitalist system in the post-crisis era, says an editorial in People's Daily. Excerpts:

The voices calling for stricter supervision run high against the backdrop of the industrial moral decline of the British media. The three major UK political parties reached an agreement on March 18 to set up an independent supervision organ to strengthen administration of the media. Although some media strongly oppose this agreement, tightening control and supervision of media has become an irresistible trend.

Press freedom has been a traditional source of pride in the UK. Understandably, the new agreement makes many uncomfortable. But the capitalist free market makes this tradition hard to carry. Commercialization of the media means no media can really enjoy or boast freedom because they are in part chained by the need to make money.

There must be effective and timely interference from the government in not only the media circle, but also the larger market, to restore order in the interests of the majority.

After the supervision organ is established, it is also expected to adapt to the fast-changing landscape of the media today. More challenges lie ahead not only for the UK, but also the whole world.
