The Libyan people must not be abandoned

The situation in Libya must be resolved and people must feel secure, says an article in People's Daily (excerpts below).

The chaotic state of Libya has not changed since the civil war broke out nearly two years ago. The militia plays a leading role in the current domestic turmoil even though it originates from the former rebels. The government cannot control the situation.

The Libyan people had an election amid the ruins of war in July. NATO sent its congratulations but it keeps silent over the sufferings and unrest in the country today.

Democracy cannot be imposed. History indicates certain conditions are needed.

The West went through key stages, including economic development, national integration and realizing social fairness, before democracy took root.

A stable and sizable middle class is also necessary.

But Libya has none of these conditions. Libyans do not even enjoy basic security. How can they expect more from such a chaotic and uncertain situation.

The United Kingdom and United States have withdrawn some of their people from their embassies in Libya and seem ill-equipped to deal with the situation there.

The West will not sacrifice anything for democratic progress in Libya. Just remember Afghanistan and Iraq.
