The cause of justice must be served

The public security authorities must reflect on their roles in unjust cases exposed recently, said an article in the Southern Metropolis Daily (excerpt below).

The Zhejiang provincial public security authority head Liu Liwei said his department will reflect on a case of misjustice.

This is the first time that a public security department has shown such a sentiment.

In the particular case an uncle and his nephew were wrongly charged and jailed for several years for rape and murder before a court corrected the verdict and found them innocent.

Their confessions had been extorted by torture.

To prevent such cases from happening again, the judicial authorities must have the independence to enforce the law without considering the interests of public security departments.
