Reasoning and rewarding good behavior is the ideal way, however, vandalism, hurting others, and endangering life requires a slightly more physical approach. Children do have reasons for doing what they do so it's best to find out what it is before stepping in with a thrashing. You don't really want your kids to think it is fine to be violent.
