China rises to Ice Bucket Challenge

          (China Daily) Updated: 2014-08-25 08:50

An Internet interactive activity for charity, the Ice Bucket Challenge, has reached China, with leading Chinese IT figures joining it over the past few days. The activity is expected to boost the cause of charity in China, motivating the rich in particular to help the disadvantaged, says an article on gmw.cn. Excerpts:

The Ice Bucket Challenge calls for a participant to pour a bucket of ice water on his/head while being filmed or donate a certain amount to US-based charity organization ALS Association. Nominated people have 24 hours to comply or forfeit by way of $100 donation. ALS stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the most common of the five motor neuron diseases.

The number of people nominated to take the challenge has increased exponentially, as have the donations, thanks to the video clips of celebrities going viral on the Internet. In less than a month from July 29 to Aug 21, the Ice Bucket Challenge generated $41.8 million in donations.

Many leading figures from different walks of life in China have taken the challenge and donated more than the $100 each stated in the rules. The donations, apart from going to ALS for research, also go to organizations helping patients suffering from degenerative disease, characterized by weakening of muscles, and difficulty in speaking and breathing.

The popularity of the Ice Bucket Challenge shows people in China have become more aware about charity causes. By participating in the challenge, American tycoons such as Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Tim Cook have set a good example for rich Chinese to follow. Such activities from countries with better charity systems will help improve the cause of charity in China.
