Celebrating 60 years of Qomolangma's conquest

The upper part of the photo shows the three Chinese mountaineers, Wang Fuzhou, Gonpo (C) (a Tibetan) and Qu Yinhua being warmly welcomed when they returned to Lhasa in triumph on June 7, 1960. The mountaineers climbed onto the top of the world's highest mountain – Qomolangma – from the north slope on May 25, 1960. It was the first time that humans had completed the magnificent mission climbing to the top of Qomolangma from the north slope, and was also the first time for Chinese people to stand on top of the world. A Chinese female athlete Pan Duo, together with 8 male teammates, became the first woman to reach the top of Qomolangma via its north slope on May 27, 1975. [Photo/Xinhua]
