Moderate earthquake hits NE China city

BEIJING - An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter Scale hit Hunchun City of Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in northeast China's Jilin Province at 7:34 am Beijing Time Saturday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.
The epicenter was monitored at 43 degrees north latitude and 131.1 degrees east longitude with a depth of about 560 kilometers, the center said.
There has been no report of casualties or damages in the area.
The center said many earthquakes measuring between six and seven degrees on the Richter Scale had hit the region in the past but caused no casualties and damages because the epicenters were very deep.
In a phone interview with Xinhua, a Hunchun resident said no tremor was felt.
The epicenter is about 60 kilometers away from Hunchun's county seat and 470 kilometers away from Changchun, capital city of Jilin, according to the center.
