Objective:
In recent years, in the area of a city’s development and competitiveness, soft power has been viewed as important as hard power. We used to place too much emphasis on hard power, for example GDP and infrastructure that a city possesses; and now it becomes clearer that soft power, such as educational attainment, innovation capability, human environment, and institutional mechanisms, is the main element of the competitiveness and interacts with hard power. For a modern city like Shanghai, in order to improve regional competitiveness and embrace sustainable development, soft power and hard power are of equal importance.
The development of a city’s soft power is closely related to its IP work. Perfecting the IP system is the inevitable requirement of cultural development, brand building and technology creation. We aim to encourage scientific and technological innovation, promote culture industry, create a favorable IP development environment, and enhance a city’s soft power.
This year, the forum will explore the connection between intellectual property and a city’s soft power through academic exchanges, experience sharing, reasoning and discussions. By studying abundant real life examples from other cities, both at home and abroad, and it will help to provide more ideas in the aspect of promoting the sustainable development of Shanghai, optimizing the growth of urban construction, and boosting Shanghai’s city brand.
Background:
Shanghai International Intellectual Property Forum was first held in 2003 and it has been successfully held for eight times, becoming one of the most representative and influential forums in China and providing an interactive platform for international exchanges in the area of intellectual property. Each year we will explore the trends and hot issues towards the IP development, invite a wide range of professional speakers and listeners from both home and abroad to attend, and then carry out our discussions through academic exchanges, experience sharing and reasoning.
The Forum this year is also the 9th Shanghai International IP Forum. SIPA has successfully organized the Forum 2003 “Intellectual Property & Enterprises’ Competitiveness”, the Forum 2004 “Intellectual Property & City’s Competitiveness”, the Forum 2005 “Intellectual Property Protection & Creative Industries Development”, the Forum 2006 “Intellectual Property & Self-Innovation”, the Forum 2007 “Impact of WTO TRIPS Agreement on the Economic Development of Asian Countries”, the Forum 2008 “Intellectual Property Services and Transactions”, the Forum 2010 “Intellectual Property and Innovative Cities”, and the Forum 2011 “The Optimized Growth of IP Marketplace”.
