Taiyuan is the capital city of Shanxi province. Taiyuan, which is called “Jinyang” in the past, is the capital of nine dynasties and known as the famous culture hub in Chinese history. The second largest branch of Yellow River, the Fen River, passes through the city from North to South. The city has more than 2,500 years history and possess a very unique geological features. It is viewed as a military strategist battleground in ancient China. The three sides of Taiyuan are surrounded by mountains and the city has a temperate climate. It is a beautiful city has renowned scenic spots like Jinci Temple, Tianlong Mountain Grottoes, and Mengshan Mountain Giant Buddha. All of these attractions show the charm and rich cultural heritage of the ancient city.

Taiyuan is also emphasizing on ecological construction and environment protection in nowadays. City parks such as Fen River Park, Kangpei Suburban Forest Park, and Yuquan Mountain suburban Forest Park provides clean and beautiful environment for the local residents. Taiyuan, which keeps up with the strategy of sustainable development, is gradually becoming the key livable city in China.

The 2014 Disvovering Taiyuan Trip, which is hosted by China Daily, visits Taiyuan city, Shanxi province, from May 25--28. The journalists and photographers of the trip pay visits to traditional attractions such as the Jinci Temple, the Mengshan Mountain Giant Buddha, as well as the Tianlong Mountain Grottoes. They also go to the Taiyuan’s key enterprises and business areas, include the Taiyuan Iron & Steel (Group) Co., Ltd, Changfeng Business District, and the Yuquan Mountain Forest Park. In addition, they are invited to watch the Shanxi noodle-making show and the traditional Xugou acrobatics performance. The group also visits the Baoyuan Vinegar Workshop, and therefore has a chance to experience the unique Shanxi culture from various aspects.

太原是山西省省會，是中國承東啟西區域中心城市，屬暖溫帶大陸性季風氣候，冬無嚴寒，夏無酷暑，四季分明，氣候宜人。太原三面環山，黃河第二大支流汾河自北向南縱貫全境，孕育了這座具有5000年文明史、2500多年建城史的古都。其獨特的地理位置也使其自古以來就有“控帶山河、踞天下之肩背”之稱，悠久的歷史造就了太原豐富的文化遺產，晉祠、雙塔寺、天龍山石窟、蒙山大佛……一處處名勝古跡彰顯著這座國家歷史文化名城的深邃與神秘。

今日太原不僅依托傳統工業優勢，全力推進產業新型化，同時以創建國家森林城市、國家生態園林城市和全國衛生城市為目標，全面加強城鄉生態建設，大規模推進綠化工程和“城鄉清潔”工程，再造青山綠水之城、藍天白云之城。

2014年5月25日至28日，中國日報社聯合太原市委外宣辦、太原市外僑辦、太原市旅游局、太原市文物局共同組織開展了“亞洲媒體聚焦美麗太原”活動，來自10個國家的十多名亞洲攝影記者，不僅造訪了晉祠、天龍山石窟、蒙山大佛等風景名勝，還興致勃勃地參觀了太鋼集團、汾河公園景區、長風文化商務區、康培城郊森林公園等企業和園區，觀看了徐溝背棍表演、晉韻樓面食表演、寶源老醋坊釀醋工藝等民俗和飲食文化，目之所及，皆為世上罕見；所到之處，無不嘆為觀止。
