Sergio Maffettone: My Chengdu Story

Chengdu, capitale della provincia del Sichuan e territorio nella nostra circoscrizione, è per me come una seconda casa. Dato il gran numero di eventi che ogni giorno si svolgono nella frenetica metropoli, io e i miei collaboratori siamo spesso a Chengdu, in questa città che per molti versi assomiglia alla metropoli italiana di Milano, con la quale ha firmato nel corso del 2015 un “accordo di amicizia” , durante l’Expo Universale di Milano 2015.

Queste due città, così diverse sotto molti aspetti, rappresentano da un lato due grandi realtà economiche di primo piano, dall’altro due città che al contempo dedicano grande importanza anche all’arte e al patrimonio storico-artistico. Oltre ad apprezzare la grande vitalità economica della città, che a mio avviso sta entrando in una nuova fase di sviluppo economico, io resto personalmente sempre affascinato dalla grande energia e dalle molte attrattive che la città offre in tema di cultura e tempo libero.

La grande ospitalità e la calorosità dei suoi abitanti rende ancora più facile per noi stranieri l’integrazione nel tessuto urbano locale. La comunità italiana a Chengdu, composta da circa 100 persone, è in perfetta sintonia con la città e parte vitale e attiva del Sud-Ovest cinese. Esistono infatti molte realtà imprenditoriali italiane, soprattutto nel settore food & beverage, e attività di ristorazione italiane di alto livello. Non mancano poi anche alcuni studiosi ed esponenti del mondo accademico italiano, e persino artisti che hanno scelto Chengdu come loro dimora.

Mi rende orgoglioso affermare che oggi anche la lingua e la cultura italiana si stanno diffondendo a Chengdu: abbiamo attualmente circa 300 studenti cinesi che studiano italiano presso la CISISU (Chengdu Institute Sichuan International Studies Universtity) e contiamo la presenza di numerose scuole private che avvicinano i giovani alla nostra cultura. L’italiano è ora insegnato anche in una scuola elementare di Chongqing, e speriamo si possa presto diffondere anche tra le scuole e istituti inferiori e superiori di Chengdu.

Sono convinto che esistano numerose opportunità di collaborazione tra il nostro Paese e Chengdu, sia all’interno della nuova strategia cinese “One Belt One Road” sia all’interno della strategia “Via della Seta Marittina del 21mo secolo”. La capitale del Sichuan costituisce infatti un hub importante per la produzione, per il settore IT e R&D, i servizi finanziari, il commercio, il turismo, ma anche per il settore biomedicale e i macchinari industriali. Se pensiamo che l’Italia è il quinto paese manufatturiero al mondo, paese leader nella costruzione di infrastrutture (eng: 1000 infrastructures in more than 90 countries), nel settore biomedicale e farmaceutico e il cui sistema sanitario nazionale è stato considerato il più efficiente al mondo (a seguito solo di Singapore e Hong Kong), vi sono numerosi campi su cui creare sinergie con l'Italia, su più fronti.

Si è tenuta di recente la 94ma edizione della Food and Drink Fair a Chengdu, e il nostro Paese ha partecipato con un padiglione nazionale che ha portato nella capitale più di una dozzina di aziende, e oltre 40 cantine d’eccellenza italiane. Oltre a ciò, per avvicinare ulteriormente la popolazione sichuanese all’Italia, nelle tre giornate della fiera è stata organizzata, con successo, la seconda edizione del Festival Gastronomico Cinitalia, in collaborazione con CRI (Cina Radio Internazionale), che ha messo in mostra alcuni tra i migliori prodotti gastronomici della tradizione italiana. Si è trattato del terzo festival enogastronomico organizzato a Chengdu dal Consolato con la CRI. Ogni volta abbiamo registrato una grande calorosità del popolo di Chengdu.

Per facilitare ancor più gli abitanti di Chengdu che desiderano recarsi in Italia per motivi di affari, studio o turismo, il nostro Consolato Generale sta per inaugurare ufficialmente un nuovo centro visti proprio a Chengdu (aperto già dallo scorso 1 aprile 2016), e si sta attivando per facilitare l’apertura di una nuova linea aerea diretta tra Chengdu e l’Italia.

Chengdu in Cina è conosciuta per essere la città dove si vive meglio, dove i ritmi non sono frenetici ma la gente ama godersi la vita. Una mentalità edonistica che sia avvicina molto al piacere della vita che caratterizza gli italiani, un popolo amato nel mondo per la sua simpatia, la gioia di vivere, la straordinaria ricchezza e varietà della sua cultura, che attrae turisti da tutto il mondo pronti a godersi le bellezze paesaggistiche, culinarie, artistiche, architettoniche e archeologiche italiane.

E' per questo che amo Chengdu, amo i suoi vicoli stretti, le case da thè dove potersi confidare con amici lontano da sguardi indiscreti, dove giocare a majiang e godere lo scorrere del tempo. Chengdu è una città che sta riuscendo a preservare i suoi valori caratteristici nonostante il progresso materiale si allarghi a macchia d'olio consentendo standard di vita sempre più elevati alla sua popolazione. E' per questo che è stata considerata la città preferibile dove fare affari e al contempo la città più vivibile della Cina!

Chengdu, capital city of the Sichuan province is a territory of our constituency and a second home to me. Due to the great number of events which are happening every day in this busy metropolis, my collaborators and I are often in Chengdu, a city which is in many ways very similar to the Italian metropolis Milan. Chengdu has signed a “Friendship Agreement” with Milan in 2015, during the Wold Expo 2015, also taking place in Milan.

These two cities, different in many aspects, represent, on one side, two great, first level, economic realities. On the other hand, the two cities also give great importance to art and historical-artistic heritage. Besides the appreciation for the economic vitality of the city, which is, from my point of view, entering a new phase of economic development, I am always fascinated by the great energy and by the many attractions which this city offers, in terms of culture and leisure time.

Great hospitality and warmth of Chengdu people, is enabling us, foreigners, an easier integration to this urban living place. Italian community in Chengdu, composed of around 100 people, is in a perfect symphony with the city and this vital and active part of the Southwest of China. There are actually many Italian enterprises, especially in the food and beverage sector, as well as in high level Italian restorations activities. Nevertheless, there are also students and representatives of the Italian academic world, as well as some artists that decided to live in Chengdu.

It makes me very proud to confirm that, today, Italian language and culture are spreading in Chengdu: in fact, we have around 300 Chinese students who are studying Italian language at CISISU (Chengdu Institute of Sichuan International Studies University) and we are realizing the presence of numerous private schools which are introducing our culture to young people. Moreover, one primary school in Chongqing has taken Italian as one of the languages to be thought there and we are hoping that this could also happen at some other elementary and high schools in Chengdu.

I am sure that there are numerous opportunities for the collaboration between our country and Chengdu, through China’s Belt and Road Initiative, or through the so-called “21st Century Maritime Silk Road” strategy. Sichuan’s capital constitutes an important hub for production in the IT and R&D sectors, for financial services, business and tourism, as well as the biomedical sector and industrial machinery. Italy is the 5th manufacturing country in the world, a country which is a leader in the construction of the infrastructure (we built 1000 infrastructures in more than 90 countries), in biomedical and pharmaceutical sectors, a country with a national sanitary system that is considered to be the most efficient in the world (after Singapore and Hong Kong). There are therefore numerous fields where we could create synergies with Italy.

Recently, there was 94th Food and Drink Fair in Chengdu, and our country participated with a national pavilion which has brought to the capital more than a dozen companies and 40 excellent Italian canteens. In order to facilitate Sichuan’s population familiarization with Italy, during the three days of the event, the second Sino-Italian Gastronomic Festival was organized in collaboration with the CRI (China Radio International). This festival has exhibited some of the best traditional Italian gastronomic products. It was the third Food and Wine Festival organized in Chengdu by the Consulate General of Italy and the CRI and every time it was a great success, with a lot of Chengdu people participating to it.

In order to make it even more easy for Chengdu people that would like to go to Italy for business, studying or tourism reasons, our Consulate General is about to inaugurate a new visa center in Chengdu (already opened on April 1st 2016), and it is actively working on enabling another direct flight connection between Chengdu and Italy.

Chengdu is known in China for being the city where the living conditions are the best, where the rhythms are not frenetic, where people love an easy life, filled with joy. This hedonistic mentality is very similar to the characteristic way of living of the Italians, the nation loved all over the world because of its sympathy and joy of living, extraordinary richness and variety of its culture, which attracts tourists from all over the world to come and enjoy in the beautiful scenery, food, architectural arts and Italian archaeological sites.

And, because of this I love Chengdu, I love its narrow streets, teahouses where you can have secret talks with friends far away from indiscreet looks, where you can play majong and enjoy the passing of the time. Chengdu is a city that is managing to preserve its characteristic values despite the material progress, through which it is spreading like a wildfire, keeping the high living standards for its people. And because of this it is considered to be the most preferred city for doing business, being at the same time the most livable city in China.
