Yichang delights

Most travelers to Yichang are simply stopping over before they take a cruise up the Yangtze River, but as Bidisha Bagchi discovered, there is much more to see in this historic center.

Yichang (宜昌), the second largest city in Hubei, is normally associated with being either the starting or end point of cruises on the Yangtze River. Every visitor to this city seems to somehow be linked with the cruises and we were probably the only ones who had a list of things to see, do and eat in this lovely city.

On a sunny afternoon, we left for one of the most unusual places in the city - the Feng Shui Museum. It was a small building, very nicely decorated inside and had all kinds of artifacts related to this ancient science of construction, architecture and placement. The place also happens to sell products, if anyone is interested to buy. There are loads of things carved out of Jade - jewelry, paperweights, animals and even the most intricate bonsai - it is simply amazing. Chinese brocade, pearls, hand fans and variety of precious stones are also on display.

Yichang is known for its beautiful riverside which is a little bit away from the city center. Modern fun has taken over this picturesque spot. Bungee jumping and zip lining are both available right by the water. On the side of the mountain was a hanging restaurant - quite cleverly constructed I must say.

Not far from the city center are the Xiling Mountains, and located deep inside of them are the San You Cave, or the Three Travelers Cave. The cave got its name from three Tang Dynasty (618-907) poets and officials who visited the area.
