Driver 'drunk' on lychees

A man was suspected of being a drunk driver after failing a breath test, but a subsequent blood test showed his blood-alcohol rate to be zero, the Beijing Times reported.

The man,claimed he had eaten around 2 kg of lychees before driving and police said the fruit contains a very low level of alcohol which only stays in the mouth rather than the blood. The driver washed out his mouth with water and passed the breath test.

New DNA techniques get China green light

Sixty baby peacocks are being cared for by four hens in Jiangnan Park, Jilin city, Northeast China's?Jilin province, cnr.cn reported.

According to the birds' feeder, captive breeding peacocks are easily disturbed by the external environment and do not incubate their own eggs. Hens become sitters to incubate and care for the babies. The infant peacocks will leave their 'hen mothers' before winter.

Subway train almost hits pregnant woman

A subway train almost hit a pregnant woman who had fallen on the tracks, Beijing Times reported.

At 8:05 am on Tuesday, the woman fainted and fell onto the tracks from the platform. An incoming train stopped only about 1 meter from her. The woman and her unborn baby were unharmed.

A man in Taizhou who took an illegal drug to stay awake for the FIFA World Cup games has asked police to shorten his detention term so he can watch the finals, Qianjiang Evening News reported on Wednesday.

The man, surnamed Lyu, is a big soccer fan and watched the games on television every night. In order to stay awake for the matches, Lyu took the drug at a hotel room, which he specifically checked into so he could watch the games without disturbing his family.

More than 73 million people have traveled on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the world's highest plateau rail track, since the route opened in July 2006, its operator said on Tuesday.

The railway, spanning 1,956 km from Xining in the northwestern province of Qinghai, to Lhasa, capital of the Tibet autonomous region, has carried 73.79 million passengers, said Jiang Zehai, deputy general manager of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway Co.

Community's ban on pets draws flak

A property management firm managing a residential community in Shijiazhuang was questioned after it banned pets, Hebei Youth Daily reported on Wednesday.

The firm announced on June 30 that cats and dogs were banned, regardless of whether the animals had certification cards. While some residents welcomed the measure, others questioned the need to ban pets that are registered with the local government.
