A year in fashion: The big stories of 2014

3 We went wild with wedding fever: Not since that 2011 wedding had we been so giddy with wedding fever. 2014 was the year of the super fashionable wedding. Poppy Delevingne kicked it off with a spectacular London wedding, to which she wore Chanel Haute Couture. She then held an extravagant blessing ceremony in Marrakech, to which she wore The Most Beautiful Dress Ever Created?, by Pucci's Peter Dundas.

Kim Kardashian was next up, tying the knot with Kanye West in a sumptuous Italian wedding, for which the entire wedding party was outfitted by Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci. Then Olivia Palermo, who quietly wed long-time partner Johannes Huebl in a private Bedford, New York, ceremony. The style maven took an original approach to bridalwear, sporting a pair of cream shorts with a full tulle skirt overlay that "cinched at the waist in layers of satin and silk and featured a high slit in the front with floral details along the hem", both by Carolina Herrera, paired with a plain cream cashmere sweater.

Angelina Jolie followed Palermo's lead in the unusual bridalwear stakes when she married Brad Pitt, opting for a traditional gown created by Versace's Haute Couture master Luigi Massi, paired with a cathedral length veil embroidered with doodles drawn by her six children. Then there was Amal Alamuddin, the British barrister who won George Clooney's heart and wore some fantastic clothes in the process－from her made-to-measure Oscar de la Renta wedding gown to her Giambattista Valli Haute Couture post-wedding brunch dress and the bespoke Stella McCartney trouser suit she wore for the civil ceremony.

Finally, we can't forget Solange Knowles, whose cream-themed wedding saw her wear no less than four spectacular outfits.

John Galliano came back into fashion: Three and a half years after that drunken incident, John Galliano found himself a very high-profile new fashion job－as creative director of Maison Martin Margiela.

"John Galliano is one of the greatest, undisputed talents of all time－a unique, exceptional couturier for a maison that always challenged and innovated the world of fashion," said Renzo Russo, owner of Margiela, when the appointment was announced in October. He will show his debut Margiela collection in London in January－though we have already seen a preview; he dressed Anna Wintour in a Margiela design for the British Fashion Awards on December 1.

Pharrell's hat became more famous than Pharrell: Pharrell Williams' oversized Vivienne Westwood 'Mountain' hat became as ubiquitous as his Oscar-nominated hit 'Happy'. The chapeau first appeared on his bonce in January at the Grammys, sparking a raft of memes and its own Twitter account. The 41-year-old then kept the momentum going by wearing it in a rainbow of colours at various events, before hitting peak fame at the Oscars, where it was the star of the show.
