Rapist-murderer of Chinese girl gets life term

CANBERRA: An Australian man who choked and raped a Chinese student and left her to die on a Perth roadside was sentenced to life imprisonment on Wednesday.

Dannie Adam Wright, 36, had been found guilty of the murder and sexual penetration of Edith Cowan University student Jiao Dan, 22, in the Perth suburb of Innaloo on October 8, 2007.

Prosecutor Laura Christian said Wright should never be released for the "brutal and violent nature of the attack" on Jiao.

He will serve a minimum term of 18 years before becoming eligible for parole.

Outside the court, Jiao's close friend Min Ding wept as she delivered a message from the victim's parents in the Chinese province of Hunan.

"Jiao Dan's parents... wanted me to tell you no sentence can compensate for our beloved, precious only daughter," Ding said. " Our pain is beyond the worst to describe and it will last a life-long time."
