Thai opposition leader tells PM to be careful

BANGKOK: Thailand's opposition party leader said Saturday he did not believe there was a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva as media reported, but the premier should not be indiscretion while visiting north province of Chiang Mai.

Puea Thai Party Chairman Chavalit Yongchaiyudh made the remarks when reponding to the reported death threat to Abhisit during the prime minister's planned visit to Chiang Mai.

PM' Office Minister Sathit Wongnongtoey said authorities are keeping an eye on community radio broadcasts in Chiang Mai, which he said repeatedly incited anti-government red-shirted protestors to rally against Abhisit' visit to the province.

On Friday, Abhisit said that he will travel to Chiang Mai next weekend as planned despite the death threat. He also expressed confidence in the security authorities.

Over the planned mass rally by the United front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) late this month, Chavalit said the group had staged demonstration for several times and learned that using violent means makes no good to any parties.

The anti-government group is planning to hold a rally on November 28 in Bangkok to demand Abhisit to dissolve the parliament and call a general election. They expected the rally which would continue until December 2 could draw some one million people.
