Nepal fails to elect PM for 10th time

KATHMANDU - Nepali Constituent Assembly has yet again failed for the 10th time to elect a prime minister for the country.

The current election was also limited to the formality as it was confirmed that no majority votes will not be casted.

After the second largest party Unified Communist Party of Nepal ( Maoist), third largest party Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) and Samyukta Loktantrik Madhes Morcha, an alliance of four Madhes-based parties decided to abstain from voting, the sole candidate failed to garner a majority of the vote.

There were only 156 Constituent Assembly members are present in the parliament for voting. Of them 109 voted for the Prime Ministerial candidate, one voted against and 46 remained neutral in the election.

Senior leaders of the major parties did not showed up in the meeting.

As per the rule the prime ministerial candidate has to get simple majority votes - 301 votes out of 601 lawmakers in the parliament.

The Legislature Parliament of Nepal has been striving to elect new executive prime minister after current caretaker prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal resigned from his post on June 30. Nepali lawmakers have been voting to elect 34th prime minister of Nepal since July 21. ?

Constituent Assmbly Chairman Subas Chandra Nemwang announced that the 11th Prime Ministerial election will be held on October 7, 2010.
