Xi urges avoidance of any inflammatory act on Korean Peninsula

WASHINGTON - Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday called on all parties concerned to refrain from any rhetoric and act that could escalate regional tension and any move that might impair the security interests of other countries and the strategic balance in the region.

He made the remarks while addressing the Korean Peninsula situation in separate meetings here with US President Barack Obama and South Korean President Park Geun-hye on the sidelines of the fourth Nuclear Security Summit (NSS).

Although the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue is not on the NSS agenda, the recent flare-up of tensions in Northeast Asia in the wake of the nuclear test and satellite launch by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has caused widespread concern.

Xi told Obama and Park that his country is adamant on realizing denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, on safeguarding the peace and stability of the peninsula, and on solving relevant issues through dialogue and negotiations.

China, he added, maintains that all parties concerned should fully and strictly carry out relevant UN resolutions.

In his meeting with Park, Xi also stressed that dialogue and consultation represent the only right way to settle the predicament, and reaffirmed that Beijing stands ready to make constructive efforts for resuming dialogue within the framework of the six-party talks.

Obama, for his part, said that the two sides have extensive common interests in the Asia-Pacific region and his country is willing to work with China to control their differences in a constructive manner.
