Vice-minister calls on countries to ramp up climate change cooperation

Vice-Foreign Minister Luo Zhaohui has called on countries to ramp up cooperation to cope with climate change at an international forum on Tuesday.

"Countries should truly come together and enhance cooperation to tackle climate change, a common threat to mankind," Luo said, addressing the China Tibet Trans-Himalaya Forum for International Cooperation.

As an active participant, contributor, and champion in global climate progress, China has proactively participated in a series of international events that are themed on climate change and biodiversity conservation, he noted.

During the general debate of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September last year, the nation said its carbon dioxide emissions will peak before 2030 and the country will achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. A series of concrete measures then followed to fulfill the targets in some other international events.

Aside from boosting confidence in global climate progress, this has "demonstrated China's ambition to tackle climate change and its resolve to stick to a green and low-carbon development path", Luo said.

He said transnational cooperation is needed to address transnational problems.

"We are happy to see that the United States government has announced that the country will return to the Paris Agreement," he noted.

Luo also called on countries in the Trans-Himalayan region, which share much in common as to history and culture and boast large populations, as well as rich resources and energy, to enhance cooperation in areas such as environmental governance.

Established in 2018, the forum this year was cohosted by the ministry and Southwest China's Tibet autonomous region. Representatives from 16 countries and three international organizations participated.
