Support voiced for key UN resolution on China

Officials and experts have expressed support to safeguard the authority of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758, and oppose any move that violates the one-China principle.

They shared these views at a seminar held online on Thursday on the significance of Resolution 2758, which was co-hosted by the UN Association of China and the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs.

In 1971, the 26th session of the UNGA adopted Resolution 2758, restored all rights of the People's Republic of China in the UN, and recognized the representatives of its government as the only legitimate representatives of China in the international body.

Wang Chao, president for both the UN Association of China and the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs, said the issue of China's representation in the UN has been thoroughly resolved politically, legally and procedurally in the resolution.

This is the victory of new China's diplomacy and world justice, which unprecedentedly strengthened the force for world peace and development, Wang said.

Recently, in disregard of the fact and legal principle that Taiwan is a part of China, individual countries and the Democratic Progressive Party authorities in Taiwan have deliberately distorted Resolution 2758 and advocated for "Taiwan's meaningful participation in the UN system", which is essentially making "one China, one Taiwan".

It is a flagrant challenge to the one-China principle and a violation of international law and the norms of international relations, which is opposed by the Chinese government and its people.

Wang reiterated that the one-China principle cannot be challenged or distorted. International rules can only be formulated by 193 member states of the UN, not by individual countries and groups of countries, and international rules should be observed by all member states of the UN with no exceptions.

Nicolae Ecobescu, former deputy foreign minister of Romania, said Resolution 2758 has been fully respected and implemented by the international community over the past 50 years and has become one of the cornerstones of international law.

He said the claims of "two Chinas" and "Taiwan independence" have been brought up in an apparent attempt to undermine the resolution and the one-China principle.

          Baseless theories

These theories lack legal basis and violate basic international norms, which should be rejected because the international system, based on rules and principles and the UN Charter, cannot be undermined, he added.

Zhang Hua, a researcher in the Taiwan Studies Institute at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said the United States' support for Taiwan's participation in the international arena has nothing to do with moral or legal consideration, but is closely related to the current Sino-US strategic rivalry.

Wu Hailong, president of the China Public Diplomacy Association, said the US should honor its commitment and take practical actions to uphold the one-China principle and avoid bolstering "Taiwan independence" forces.

Fifty years after assuming its right at the UN, China is very important to the global organization as a permanent member of the Security Council, and it plays a vital role in addressing major conflicts and disputes around the world, said Munir Akram, Pakistan's permanent representative to the UN.
