Spokesperson condemns US think tank for exaggerating 'China threat theory'

A Chinese mainland spokesman on Wednesday condemned a think tank in the United States for exaggerating the "China threat theory" to make profits for military groups in the country.

Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made the remarks at a news conference in Beijing while commenting the results of a war games simulation of the "invasion" of the Taiwan island by the mainland.

The think tank simulation by the Center for Strategic and International Studies predicted that if the People's Liberation Army "invaded" Taiwan in 2026, it could result in heavy losses for all parties likely to be involved, including China, the US, Taiwan and Japan.

In response, Ma said that some US think tanks recently have frequently issued reports on the Taiwan question and the situation across the Taiwan Straits.

They had their attempts under the guise of academic research, he said, adding that by hyping up the "threat" from China, they attempted to help military industry groups in the US make profits.

They also tried to hurt feelings between compatriots from the two sides of the Straits, he said.

Regarding such reports, Ma said the compatriots in Taiwan can make their own judgments and will not be misled.
