Wang Yi meets with Japanese FM in Munich

Senior diplomat Wang Yi called on Japan to remove both internal and external disruptions to promote Sino-Japan relations forward steadily.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks when meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi on the sidelines of the 59th Munich Security Conference in Germany on Saturday.

As the year marks the 45th anniversary of the signing of the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship, Wang, also director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission, urged Japan to take the anniversary as an opportunity and meet China halfway.

Noting unilateralism, decoupling and cutting off chains serve no one's interests, Wang said Tokyo should grasp the situation and make an independent choice.

Wang also stressed Japan must exercise prudence on the discharge of nuclear contaminated water which concerns the marine environment and the health of peoples of all countries.

Before fully consulting with neighboring countries, other stakeholders and international institutions, Japan must not initiate the discharge of nuclear contaminated water into the sea, Wang said.

Hayashi said cooperation between Japan and China is of great significance to the development and prosperity of the two countries.

Japan is willing to strengthen communication and dialogue with China at all levels, bolster cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, and youth exchanges and implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, he added.

The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues.
