Djokovic provides surprise in Madrid Open with shock first round exit

MADRID -- Novak Djokovic from Serbia crashed out of the Madrid Open tennis tournament in the round of 64 on Saturday after losing 6-3, 6-4 to Matteo Arnaldi of Italy.

The number four seed was well below his best and struggled to deal with Arnaldi's serve, while the Italian won all three of the break points he forced while Djokovic has now lost the first round in Madrid and Montecarlo.

It's only the second time he has suffered consecutive first round defeats, with the last time coming in 2018 when he was beaten inn Indian Wells and Miami.

Arnaldi broke Djokovic's serve in the seventh game of the second set and then fought back from 0-40 down, winning six consecutive points in the next game to hold his serve and move 5-3 ahead.

Number six seed Alex de Minaur from Australia had a 6-2, 6-3 straight sets win against Italy's Lorenzo Sonego, Cameron Norrie of Britain fought back from losing the first set, to triumph 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 against 26th seed Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic.

Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece also came back from a set down, with the 17th seed losing the opening set 6-3 to German Jan-Lenard Struff before winning the last two 6-4, 6-3.

In the round of 32 in the women's tournament, fourth seeded Coco Gauff breezed past Ann Li 6-2, 6-3 in an all-American battle, while number five seed Madison Keys of the United States had to work much harder to get past number 30 seed Ana Kalinskaya from Russia 7-5, 7-6(3).
